The trail meanders along the valley floor through sparse forest with plenty of wildflowers. Early season hikers should bring water shoes for the crossing of Eureka Gulch at .9 mile mark. At 1.9 miles, a steep incline begins. At 3.6 miles, the trail comes to a switchback and a road leads to the left. DO NOT TAKE THIS ROAD. Instead, switchback again across the ridge and come to a fork at 3.9 miles. Go left and up the fork about 150 yards to the site of the old ruby mine.
