From Stanley, drive 9.4 miles on Highway 75 and turn right over a bridge that crosses the Salmon River (there is a sign indicating Rough Creek). Follow the dirt road, forest road 626 for 2.2 miles. At this point the road will make a hard left. Do not take the right or center fork. Follow the road an additional 1.9 miles to its end and the trailhead.

The hike begins on level ground, which continues until a gradual ascent along Rough Creek. Keep an eye out for black bears in this area. Once across Rough creek (~2.5m), switchbacks begin and trail becomes very steep. At 3.2 miles, after the clearing at 3.0 miles, there is a signed junction. Take the left fork, and it's about 2.6 miles to the summit.
CAUTION
Much of the altitude gain happens in the last 3.5 miles of this hike. Watch for bad weather, as Lookout Peak is dangerous during lightning storms.
